Car stamp duty calculator

Eight jurisdictions, eight completely different rules — cylinders in Queensland, tailpipe emissions in the ACT, a sliding formula in WA, luxury cliffs in Victoria. Pick your state and vehicle, and this calculator — for car or vehicle stamp duty, same tax either name — runs the exact published schedule, verified against the revenue offices' own examples and calculators.

Stamp duty$900

3% of the price — the NSW passenger rate under $45,000.

Duty only — rego transfer fees (typically $20–$50) are extra, and exemptions (spouse transfers, gifts, estates) vary by state. Sources for each state are listed below.

The same car, eight different bills

Duty on an everyday petrol passenger car (each state's standard treatment — QLD at 1–4 cylinders, the ACT as a new category-B vehicle), computed by the same tested engines as the calculator:

The same car, eight different bills
State$20,000$30,000$45,000$60,000$80,000Basis
NSW$600$900$1,350$2,100$3,100passenger
VIC$840$1,260$1,890$2,520$3,360petrol passenger
QLD$600$900$1,350$1,800$2,4001–4 cylinders
WA$550$1,050$2,588$3,900$5,200light vehicle
SA$740$1,140$1,740$2,340$3,140passenger
TAS$600$900$1,800$2,400$3,200passenger
ACT$600$900$1,350$2,133$3,177new, category B
NT$600$900$1,350$1,800$2,400any vehicle

The spread widens with price: WA's 6.5% top rate makes it the dearest above $50,000, while the NT's flat 3% never accelerates.

How each state charges it

New South Wales

$3 per $100 or part; passenger vehicles (≤9 occupants) at $45,000+ pay $1,350 + $5 per $100 of the EXCESS (marginal). Utes, motorcycles and buses stay at 3% at any value.

The NSW EV duty exemption ended 31 December 2023 — EVs pay normal duty now.

Victoria

Rate per $200 or part of the WHOLE value: passenger cars $8.40 to $80,809 (2026-27 indexed threshold), $10.40 to $100,000, $14.00 to $150,000, $18.00 beyond — real cliffs, not marginal. Green cars (≤120 g CO2/km, all EVs) stay at $8.40 at any price. Non-passenger: $5.40 new / $8.40 used.

Queensland

Rate per $100 or part of the WHOLE value by engine type: hybrid/electric $2, 1-4 cylinders $3, 5-6 cylinders $3.50, 7+ cylinders $4 — each stepping up $2 on the ENTIRE value once it passes $100,000.

Western Australia

Light vehicles: 2.75% of the whole value to $25,000; a sliding rate R = 2.75 + (value − $25,000) ÷ 6,666.66 (rounded to 2 decimals) to $50,000; 6.5% beyond. Duty is rounded down to the nearest 5 cents — matched to RevenueWA's own calculator by direct probe. Heavy vehicles: 3% capped at $12,000.

South Australia

Non-commercial = passenger cars; commercial = utes, vans, trucks. Above ~$3,000 a ute is cheaper to transfer than a sedan (3% marginal vs 4%).

Tasmania

Passenger (≤9 seats): $20 flat to $600; $3 per $100 or part of the WHOLE value to $35,000; $1,050 + $11 per $100 of the excess to $40,000; $4 per $100 of the WHOLE value beyond. The 11% band is a bridge — the scale is continuous at both ends.

The EV duty exemption ended (final window closed 31 December 2023) — EVs pay the normal scale.

Australian Capital Territory

Emissions-based since 1 Sep 2025: new vehicles rate by CO2 category — AAA (zero) $2.50/$100 to D (221 g/km+) $4.53/$100 under $45,000, with base+rate bands at $45,000 and $80,000 (everything over $80,000 adds $8.00/$100 of the excess). Ordinary used vehicles are 'non-rated' at $3.17/$100; used electric/hydrogen keep the AAA rate. Anchor: ACT's own example — $15,410 rounds to $15,500 of dutiable value.

DI2026-154 lifts the B, C, D and non-rated rates from 1 FEBRUARY 2027 (mid-financial-year) and deletes the used-hybrid category — this page carries the rates in force to 31 January 2027.

Northern Territory

A flat $3 per $100 or part of the dutiable value — new or used, any price, no thresholds. The simplest scale in the country.

Plug-in EVs (battery and PHEV) pay no duty on the first $50,000 of value (a saving of up to $1,500) until 30 June 2027 — no replacement announced.

Frequently asked questions

How much is stamp duty on a car in Australia?
Roughly 3% of the price in most states for an everyday car — but the details diverge fast: a $60,000 petrol car costs $1,800 in the NT, $1,800 in QLD (1–4 cylinders), $2,520 in Victoria and $3,900 in WA. The calculator above runs each state's exact schedule.
Which state has the cheapest car stamp duty?
For everyday cars, the NT and QLD (3% flat for most engines) are usually cheapest; WA is the most expensive above $50,000 at 6.5% of the whole price. The ACT rewards low-emission choices — a new EV pays 2.5% while a thirsty V8 pays 4.53% — and Victoria's luxury bands jump to 5.2%, 7% and 9% of the entire value at each threshold.
Do electric vehicles pay stamp duty?
Mostly yes now — the wave of EV duty exemptions has receded. NSW's ended 31 December 2023, Tasmania's in 2023, and the ACT's full exemption ended 31 August 2025 (EVs now pay the lowest AAA rate there). The holdouts: the NT waives duty on the first $50,000 of a plug-in EV until 30 June 2027, QLD's hybrid/electric class pays $2 per $100 instead of $3–$4, and Victoria's green-car rate ($8.40 per $200 at any value) shields EVs from the luxury bands.
Is stamp duty payable on a car gifted by family?
Depends where. QLD exempts genuine gifts between family members (not siblings or in-laws). VIC and WA exempt spouse/de-facto transfers. NSW has no general family exemption — a gifted car is dutiable at market value. SA exempts spouse transfers; everywhere exempts inheritance via a deceased estate. Duty on a "gift" is charged on market value, so writing $1 on the form doesn't work anywhere.
Is duty charged on the price before or after my trade-in?
On the full price before the trade-in credit in the NT (the trade-in allowance is explicitly part of dutiable value) and effectively everywhere else too — duty is on the vehicle's value, not your net cash. Dealer delivery charges count in QLD and the NT but are excluded in WA.
Do caravans and trailers pay stamp duty?
Not in NSW, QLD or WA — caravans and camper trailers are expressly duty-free there, and the ACT exempts non-motorised ones. That's a genuine relocation-shopping fact for grey nomads buying a big van.
